Plano-convex lenses have one plano surface and one convex surface. They are positive lenses suitable for focusing collimated light or collimating light from a point source. To minimize spherical aberration, the curved surface should generally face the collimated beam.
For a thin plano-convex lens in air, the focal length can be approximated by:
f = R / (n - 1)
where n is the refractive index and R is the radius of curvature.
