Calcium fluoride (CaF₂) plano-concave lenses have one flat and one concave surface and a negative focal length. They turn collimated incident light into a diverging beam with a virtual focus and are commonly used in Galilean beam expanders. Orient the concave surface toward the incident beam, with the plane surface toward the focal plane.
Plano-concave lenses provide negative spherical aberration and can compensate aberrations from other lenses in an optical system. For source-recommended conjugate magnitudes below 0.2 or above 5, plano-concave lenses are generally selected; double-concave lenses are often used between these values.
Available coatings: Uncoated; IR1 antireflection coating; average reflectance <1.5% over 3–5μm.
Schematic
Dimensions in mm unless otherwise stated.
Antireflection coatings reduce surface reflections and ghost images. An uncoated glass surface reflects approximately 4% of incident light; coatings on both surfaces improve transmission in multi-element systems.
Calcium fluoride transmits from 180 nm to 8.0 μm and offers low fluorescence and high homogeneity. Its relatively soft surface requires careful handling to avoid scratches.
